Life @ UMCMV

Welcome to "Life @ MVUMC"... a portal to all things happening in our church and congregation.  Here you will find news about groups, opportunities to participate in activities and more.  Check back often, as things may change frequently!

Caring For the Community
Thanks to all of your great contributions, the United Methodist Church of Mt. Vernon was able to provide a check for $1085.94 to the Southeast Linn Food Bank to help them meet their demands this holiday season!  Thank you for your generosity!

Advent Study
As we enter into the Advent season, the church invites you to participate in the church-wide Advent study, "The Journey:  Walking the Road to Bethlehem".  This study was created from Adam Hamilton's book, "The Journey: A Season of Reflections" and will allow us to hear the story of Jesus' birth from a new and different perspective, with specific weekly focuses.

Sunday, November 27 - Mary of Nazareth
Sunday, December 4 - Joseph of Bethlehem
Sunday, December 11 - Mary's Visit to Elizabeth
Sunday, December 18 - From Nazareth to Bethlehem
Sunday, December 25 - The Manger

Small group discussions will take place after first service (around 9:45 am) and at 4:00 pm each Sunday.  We hope you will join us for any and all sessions you are able to attend.  Happy Advent Season!

Meditation Garden
Need a peaceful place to visit with the Lord, think through a situation or maybe just catch your breath during a busy day?  Try spending a few minutes in the Meditation Garden.  Thanks to the generosity of many, the plans made months ago are becoming a reality.  Colorful petunias and periwinkles welcome visitors while the comfortable teak wood bench beckons them to linger for a few minutes.  The latest addition to the garden is  the sculpted metal cross mounted on the wall at the back of the garden.  Some plantings are still needed behind the bench to help block noise from the street.  A water feature also continues to be on the committee's wish list, as the sight and sound of moving water helps create a focal point for meditation and a feeling of serenity.  As All Saints Sunday approaches, please consider making a contribution to the garden in memory or in honor of a special "saint" in your life.  Donations are welcome any time, but special offering envelopes will be available on Sunday, November 6th.  Please be sure to write "For Meditation Garden" in your check memo, and if the gift is in honor of or in memory of someone, include that name too.  So, as the hot, humid, summer air mellows into the cool, crisp autumn breezes—take a moment to visit the Meditation Garden and admire God’s handy work. It will do your heart good! Please direct any questions or comments to Wava Schmidt via email or at (319) 455-0175.  Thanks again for your interest in and continued support of this project!!

Landscaping Improvement Plans
We've all seen the dramatic changes that have taken place inside our church as a result of our capital campaign.  But what lies in the future for the exterior of our church?  Landscaping Improvement plans are now available for viewing.  These plans will finally allow our church to show the same vibrance and beauty on the outside that we have come to find inside.  We're sure you'll see the vision, too...
